Strategic Outsourcing: How Burgess Norton Powder Metal and Bluewater Thermal Solutions Forge a Reliable Partnership

Burgess-Norton Manufacturing Company, an Amsted Automotive company and international supplier of powder metal components for heavy trucks, mining, construction, and industrial markets, took a bold step almost a decade ago and outsourced its heat treatment process entirely. The introduction of the automotive CQI-9 heat treatment standards, coupled with increasing operational costs and fire risks, made in-house heat treatment less attractive for the company. This led to its partnership with Bluewater Thermal Solutions, a heat treatment specialist located strategically between Burgess-Norton’s Beaver Dam, WI, and Geneva, IL plants. This collaboration has become a cornerstone of Burgess-Norton’s manufacturing operations nearly a decade later.

Creating a Long-term Partnership

Creating a Long-term Partnership Until 2015, Burgess-Norton’s Beaver Dam and Geneva plants managed their own heat treatment operations for powdered metal parts. However, escalating compliance requirements and associated costs led corporate leaders to explore alternative solutions. The company needed a partner specializing in heat treatment—one that could handle the intricacies of powdered metal components. After evaluating several potential vendors, the team chose Bluewater Thermal Solutions. Their expertise in carburizing powdered metal parts,
proximity to Burgess-Norton’s facilities, and reputation for customer service made them the obvious choice. Shifting heat treatment responsibilities to Bluewater wasn’t an overnight process. “It took us probably a year or two to exit out of heat treatment and have Bluewater solely responsible for it,” Aaron Guell, Burgess-Norton plant manager, recalled. “We had to get customer approval for every single component we moved to them.” This deliberate pace ensured a seamless transfer, safeguarding product quality and maintaining customer satisfaction. Over time, Bluewater became Burgess-Norton Powder Metal’s primary heat treatment provider, a responsibility they’ve carried with exceptional reliability.

A Commitment to Customer Care

From day one, Bluewater Thermal demonstrated its commitment to flexibility and customer focus. Mason Bush, materials manager for Burgess-Norton’s powder metal plants, elaborated, “They are incredibly flexible when it comes to supply chain logistics. They even have their own trucking fleet, which allows them to adjust schedules and expedite shipments as needed.” In 2023, Bluewater’s agility was put to the test. Burgess-Norton faced significant demand for sprockets in Geneva, IL, requiring turnaround times far shorter than initially quoted. “Bluewater went above and beyond,” Mason said. “They didn’t charge us expedited fees and were upfront about what they could deliver. Their efforts saved us substantial costs and ensured we met our customer commitments. This went on for an extended period of time.” Their responsiveness extended to smaller but equally critical moments. Mason recounted a recent instance where Burgess-Norton needed an unscheduled truck to maintain production timelines. “Without hesitation, Bluewater rescheduled its truck to accommodate us, saving us up to $1,000 in shipping costs. They didn’t have to go out of their way to do that. And we didn’t even ask them to—they just did it.” The decision to outsource heat treatment to Bluewater Thermal has proven to be a strategic advantage for Burgess-Norton. By entrusting this critical process to a specialist, Burgess-Norton has been able to focus on its core competencies while ensuring high-quality, cost-effective production. “Bluewater Thermal has been the best subcontractor I’ve worked with in my 10 years at Burgess-Norton,” Mason stated unequivocally. “Their flexibility, customer service, and competitive pricing make them an invaluable partner.”
