Advantages of Quenching Heat Treatment Services

Marquenching, also called martempering, is a convenient and easy tool for keeping distortion in parts and components that require hardening to a minimum. The majority of hardening operations performed in the conventional manner involves heating parts to temperatures higher than their austintizing temperature and then quenching (most often) into agitated baths of oil (sometimes water or polymer are used as the media). Marquenching Service

The process of marquenching, as mentioned above, involves the heating of components to austentizing temperatures and then subsequently quenching those components into a hot media. The media may involve specialized hot oil bath at temperatures in the range of 225 to 275 degrees Fahrenheit for oil quenching or 300 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit for salt bath quenching.

The results include decreased cracking from thermal stress and reduced residual stress in the quenched component section for those components with different sizes, geometries, or weights.

Marquenching is particularly applicable for alloy steels. For the most part, any steel grade or steel part that responds favorably to oil quenching will also respond well to marquenching for the purpose of obtaining similar physical properties.

Lessening Metal Part Distortion

Slower and more uniform cooling of parts is possible using higher quench media temperatures as the quenching heat treatment process is performed. This process also allows for a more uniform transformation during hardening. This is due to the fact that the core and the surface of a component are transformed simultaneously rather than thin surfaces or sections transforming before the thicker sections and the core cool down.

The process of marquenching is often used to harden thin stampings or long, thin shafts in order to keep these parts flatter and straighter than what is possible through a conventional cold oil quench. This process can be used to eliminate the need for other operations that are time-consuming such as straightening or clamp tempering.

Product Applications

Marquenching is particularly useful for components that cannot undergo a conventional quenching process and still keep their required dimensional tolerances. These include number of different fan and long components such as shafts, punches, pins, stampings, bearings, crankshafts, and lawnmower blades.
